Movements Are How Change Happens
No single person can change the world, but when we move together, we create unstoppable change. Movements are setting change #InMotion.
Movements are the very best of humanity in action—collaborating across differences, navigating with a shared vision of liberation, and strengthening a collective momentum that changes minds, policies, laws and cultures. Movements are how change happens, but movements can fail without support. What feminist leaders and movements need to succeed is not complicated—they need the trust, resources, and solidarity to do their work well.
This is where Global Fund for Women comes in. We seek out movements, give them what they need to succeed, and let them call the shots. We are fully and deeply committed to centering movements, and our belief in the power of movements is at the heart of everything we do. To learn how, check out our new Strategic Plan below!
Philanthropy’s Feminist Takeover: A More Radical Way is Possible
Global Fund for Women offers feminist movements the trust, respect, and funding they need to win large-scale change for everyone. The movements we support determine where funding goes, what success looks like, and how to measure success. In short, movements make key decisions, not Global Fund for Women. Because there is no one-size-fits-all for movements, we aim to listen in radical ways and adapt to what movements decide. We’re staging a feminist takeover of philanthropy—showing a more radical way is possible.
#InMotion is fueled by the wisdom of those on the frontlines of gender justice. We believe that when movements work together and call the shots, they can create change that lasts beyond our lifetimes. Join us, and you’ll hear directly from the people driving change. Are you ready? We are!

Movements are the most effective leaders of social change—but only 1.9% of all donations go to organizations dedicated to women and girls. Black feminist social movements get even less—under 0.5%. Your support can help change that. Join our monthly giving program, 1.9 Rising, with a gift that powers the movements that are creating change all year long.

Joy Hayley Munthali,
Green Girls Platform
“Africa is a big continent and we all have different crosscutting issues that affect women and girls. But it's really important that we have one voice and we have a vibrant movement that includes all girls and all women in their diversity on climate justice in Africa.”
Liz Medrano,
Moshikas Diversas
“We cannot separate our struggles. The system’s strategy is to divide us, so that trans women are over here, gay men are over there, and our Indigenous sisters are over here. For the movement to end violence in Perú, what we need is to unify our struggles, because the enemy is the colonialist, capitalist system that puts each one of us in the situation we are in.”
Fabiola Quesada,
Movement Advisor, Global Fund for Women
“As a funder, we want to build with you. We do not want to impose an agenda. We do not want to impose an objective. What we want is to open a space so that you can talk, so that you can say what is important, what you need, where the funds can be spent, what you need them for, and to whom these funds can also reach."
Caryn Dasah,
Hope Advocates Africa
"Grantmaking that prioritizes movements breaks the hierarchical barriers that exist in most funding systems by providing grassroots organizations access to direct funds. It also places power in the hands of the people by ensuring local ownership and leadership from women with lived experience in sexual and reproductive health and rights, specifically around abortion.
The East and Central African abortion rights movement has been able to broaden the scope of local initiatives and support new groups with their first funds, offering them opportunities to work on reproductive rights within communities that are urgently in need."

INNOVATION IN ACTION
PeiYao Chen,
President & CEO
"I am incredibly passionate about social movements! Movements are really about building relationships and communities. Yes, protests and picket lines are important, and what creates lasting change are the relationships that movements are built from, the communities they are a part of, and the new narratives they write about what is possible."
Gender Justice Data Hub
How does Global Fund for Women learn about new movements and get them the resources they need? That’s where the Gender Justice Data Hub comes in. The Gender Justice Data Hub is a one-of-a-kind tool that helps us identify and learn more about gender justice movements worldwide. We combine the comprehensive analysis from the Gender Justice Data Hub with rich insights from local activists to make sure we’re getting the full picture of a movement, so that we can support them quickly, with money that’s as flexible as they need it to be.

HOW WE’LL DO IT:
OUR STRATEGIC PLAN
How do we support movements? Our strategy includes:
Find Sparks
We will find and fund emerging gender justice movements that are poised for impact by leveraging data and insights.
Move money, shift power
We will define and practice excellence in feminist grantmaking and support of gender justice movements—to maximize movement impact and minimize friction, burden, and competition.
Partner with purpose
We will raise money to resource gender justice movements by building a community of support through relationships, including with feminist funds.
Change the story, change the world
We will promote gender justice by challenging the dominant narrative around philanthropy and co-creating opportunities for feminist solidarity, joy, and movement victories.
Walk the walk
We will grow a values-based organizational culture that aligns with our vision so we can show up better for each other and our partners.
