Marina Durano
She is a feminist economist with more than 30 years of social justice activism, beginning with the pro-democracy student movement and progressing onto the international women’s rights movements and the global labor movement.
Marina has a deep knowledge of economic growth and development, particularly in the areas of the care economy, gender budgeting, financing gender equality, international trade, and financial crisis response, in multiple social-economic contexts and geographies complemented by a strong record of human rights and feminist activism and advocacy for social justice. She has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Manchester in the UK. Most recently, Marina was Senior Adviser on Care Economy and Partnership Engagement with UNI Global Union where she was instrumental in raising several million dollars to support workers organizing. She also brings grantmaking experience from the Open Society Foundations, where she developed a portfolio promoting economic justice for women through her Power of Care portfolio.
She was an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines, during which time she received, along with her co-authors, the 2014 Outstanding Book Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology for the 2012/2013 Philippine Human Development Report. Combining subject matter expertise, experience in a variety of operational settings, and extensive networks, Dr. Marina Durano identifies innovative pathways to policy design and results-oriented implementation.
