LOCAL LEADERS, GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

In a global climate where women’s basic human rights are under attack in similar ways across countries and continents—including in the US—it is more important than ever to learn from one another, strengthen the bonds between our movements, and cement global solidarity. The long history of feminist activism in Morocco—set against the backdrop of an extraordinary landscape rich with art, culture, and history—makes this country an ideal place to begin, or continue, a learning journey.

Join us for in Rabat, Marrakech, and the Atlas Mountains April 19-25, 2020. Meet with activists who participated in the successful campaign to reform the Moudawana (Moroccan Family Law) in the early 2000s, which has become a model for the entire region; learn about the indigenous matriarchal Amazigh culture, and Amazigh women’s activism to have their language and history fully recognized; learn from the strategy of the Moroccan feminist movement and Amazigh women to establish secularism and religious tolerance in Morocco; go behind the scenes of the Soulaliyate Women’s Land-Use Rights Movement, which is fighting patriarchal land inheritance and the privatization of collectively held land.

This visit will provide an important opportunity to understand the context of Moroccan feminist activism and organizing firsthand, and engage in thoughtful conversations with Moroccan activists about their priorities, strategies, challenges, and hopes for the future.

Throughout your journey, you will have opportunities to reflect with peer travelers and Global Fund for Women staff, local advisors, and leadership about the experience and what you are observing, as well as how to carry this learning into your own feminism and philanthropy. Local guides and translators will facilitate a smooth journey and provide insight into the day-to-day lives of the people we meet, as well as introduce us to Morocco’s extraordinary art, food, and culture.

We are curating a carefully selected array of inspiring local grantee partner site visits, including:

• Association Démocratique des Femmes du Maroc [Democratic Association of Women in Morocco] (ADFM) was established in 1985. ADFM advances the rights of women in Morocco and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region through advocating for legal reforms promoting women’s social, economic, and political equality, monitoring compliance with local laws and international human rights agreements, and mobilizing women’s rights campaigns. ADFM is one of Global Fund for Women’s key partners in the MENA region, and their alliance with the Soulaliyate women helped bring this grassroots land-rights movement to national prominence.
• La Fondation YTTO [The YTTO Foundation] was founded in 2004 and works on ‎women’s and girls’ rights, equality, and citizenship—particularly to end violence against women and girls, and to advance women’s economic justice. Foundation YTTO provides shelters and works toward securing long-term housing for survivors of violence and runs educational programs to ensure girls stay in school. These programs also seek to shift attitudes among boys and girls regarding gender, women, and what is socially ‘acceptable’ regarding violence. Since 2011, YTTO Foundation has led an annual caravan through rural villages in the Atlas Mountains to encourage families to educate their daughters and end child marriage practices.
